What I like about my work
I like helping people create a better future for themselves through property - whether this be providing security for their family or building up a portfolio of properties for retirement.
I gain great satisfaction from making clients finances more manageable through good home loan options, and also helping people through temporary tough times.
What I’ve done in the past
While my degree is in English Literature, (because I liked it and did not have a specific career path in mind back then), I have spent all my working life since university in banking and finance. First with Trust Bank Wellington, gaining a good understanding of the banking system in general for some six years, and then with Westpac specialising in lending in-house mortgage broker units, branch lending and finally as a mobile mortgage manager for my last three years of six with Westpac.
I have now been an independent mortgage broker for five years (since 2005) and have loved every minute of it.
My approach to working with my clients
With the systems we operate I like to let clients tell me how they would like me to deal with them. I have found that what is great for one client may drive another client up the wall. So clients typically let me know what contact they would prefer (phone, email etc) and how often they would like to be updated on progress.
I enjoy talking with clients to understand not only what they need now, but what they may also require in the future, and to build solutions around that.
I like our clients to be clients for life, and in that respect, I try to make sure all the little details are covered.
I am also happy to bring in other professionals we have worked with in the past, if their expertise is warranted (valuers, insurance brokers, solicitors etc).
What I enjoy at work
I enjoy being busy and I enjoy success.
I enjoy talking with clients and lenders and negotiating the very best loan offers I can.
I am always conscious that I am involved in a very exciting time for clients, and that they have lots of other things to be thinking about, other than their home loan. If I can take this task away from them, so that they can concentrate their time and energy on other things, then I feel that I have been partly successful in my role.
In the end though my success is solely based on my clients opinion of my work - the solution - the communication - the time frame.
What I enjoy outside of work
Life outside of work seems to go by in a blur. With two daughters and twin boys there always seems to be something important for Dad to help with.
I enjoy sport and especially cycling and tennis - and to a very lesser extent golf.
Home improvements and maintenance always seem to be involved in weekend life, and they fly by too quickly.
My wife and I love to travel, and although we are a little more careful these days in the choice of destination, with a growing brood now accompanying us, we have been to many a far flung place including China, Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Namibia, Paros, Santorini etc etc, as well as visits to family members living overseas.
